There’s no doubting that 2011 will continue to be tough. But surely we must break this nation’s fascination with negativity? Not only have there been a nice rises in mortgage approvals and new car sales but also the FTSE started the new year with a 31 month closing high.

That’s all good news. But surely isn’t the best indicator of how this year will pan out is by looking at the level of business failures? New data released from Risk Disk shows significantly less bad news for business owners and their employees. Comparing 2010 to 2009 the figures of note are:

Elsewhere in their figures they show that Voluntary arrangements (instead of failing) were up 9%, new incorporations were up 11% and the count of trading companies was up 2%. This is all very encouraging.

But what does this mean to you? Well, if you’ve read the fantastic Seth Godin book The Dip it may be a good idea to revaluate the future returns you can expect from your endeavours? Godin contends that the secret to success is knowing when to give up. However hard things seem now, surely the economy is in a better position that it was a year ago? If you’re teetering on the brink of giving up consider how more likely you are to succeed now with one last big push than you were last year.

The British media is in their own negativity dip. We suggest you evaluate all of the figures available to you and then consider how much more effort it will take to make your enterprise a success and then dust off your business plan and be honest with yourself – can you do it? If the figures signal that 2011 could offer a step-change in your fortunes then go for it – we’re here to help make it happen.
