Plans for ski train grind to a halt

Iowa Pacific Holdings LLC said late Monday it won’t operate the ski train between Denver and Winter Park after all.

The Chicago-based company tried on Dec. 23 to convince a federal judge to order Amtrak to provide crews for the ski train. Iowa Pacific sued Amtrak after talks between the two parties failed to get the ski train running by its scheduled Dec. 27 start date. Issues between the two sides revolve around insurance coverage, the number of people Amtrak needed to run the train, the safety of the equipment, and the financial stability of Iowa Pacific.

Iowa Pacific said it had contacted Amtrak after the judge’s ruling, but the two companies haven’t been able to reach an agreement.

Iowa Pacific will issue refunds for passengers who had booked passage on the ski train.

Eastman Credit Union donates $10,000 to Kingsport United Way endowment

KINGSPORT — The future of United Way of Greater Kingsport is more secure thanks to the presentation of $10,000 from Eastman Credit Union to the United Way’s Endowment Fund.

Olan O. Jones, president and CEO of Eastman Credit Union, announced the presentation earlier this month. Both Eastman Credit Union and the United Way of Greater Kingsport marked their 75th anniversaries in 2009.

“This contribution will help ensure that United Way’s work will continue in the future,” said Jones.

Three of the United Way founders — B.M. Brown, J.C. Stone and J.C. White — were also instrumental in establishing Eastman Credit Union.

Venezuela’s Chavez threatens to oust Toyota

Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has threatened to expel Japanese carmaker Toyota unless it produces an all-terrain model of 4×4 vehicles used for public transport in poor and rural areas.

The fiery socialist, in a speech late on Wednesday, also said he would not hesitate to expel and expropriate plants from other Asian and U.S. automobile companies operating in Venezuela if they failed to share technology with locals.

“What’s this that Toyota doesn’t want to make the ‘rustic’ model here?” Chavez said, during a ceremony in Caracas to hand owners the keys to economically produced cars that Venezuela’s government has imported from Argentina.
